Palette Knife Workshop--Expressive Landscapes with Local Artist Colin McGuire

Colin McGuire offers this workshop for artists of all levels. Support will be provided for each student’s artistic goals. This one-day, 3-hour workshop will provide an introduction to the practices of palette knife painting explored by Colin to achieve vibrant, emotive, and rich landscape imagery. Class will begin with a demonstration and discussion of the process, followed by each student beginning a small painting from a reference image. Focus will be on expressive mark-making, texture, basic color theory, and paint application techniques. Techniques will be based on an impressionist approach to image making. Students will work on a tabletop easel which will be provided.

Colin McGuire is a master painter, teacher, and gallerist from Massachusetts and the head of the Art Department at the Academy at Penguin Hall in Wenham, MA. He has recently move to Maine and is excited to bring his fresh approach to the Portland art scene and share his many years of teaching experience with the art community!

Materials list:

Primary set of oil paints plus and secondary/tertiary colors you like to use

Palette knife/knives in a variety of sizes is good to explore (plastic or metal is fine)

10x10” or similar size primed wood panel or canvas

Paper towels

Turpenoid

Reference image of landscape/seascape (using your phone or tablet is fine)

Beginner and Intermediate Acrylic Painting Class with Judith Greene-Janse Thursday Evenings

On April 3rd Judith Greene-Janse will begin another series of 6 beginner and intermediate level acrylic painting classes. She has enjoyed her experience of teaching in the gallery studio and her students have enjoyed them and learned a lot. The classes are in the evening and run for 3 hours. It is possible to take a limited number of the classes for students who are not able to take all 6 classes. The full class series costs $250 and a sliding scale fee is available for a reduced number of classes if space is available. For the true beginner, a starter kit can be purchased for a discount at the Art Mart for about $60. Just identify yourself as a student at the Gallery. You can bring your own canvases or canvas board or paper, or purchase a canvas at the Gallery.

Beginner and Intermediate Acrylic Painting Class Series with Anne Schutz Friday Mornings

This is a series of 4 two-hour classes for beginner and intermediate acrylic painting students. Beginner students will get comfortable with acrylic paints by practicing fundamental techniques and intermediate students will continue to hone their skills with new ideas, themes and approaches in a relaxed, fun and encouraging environment. We will explore value, color and composition, among other principles, while looking at artwork by painters such as Fairfield Porter and Henri Matisse. If you need supplies, you can buy a beginner’s kit at the Art Mart on Congress Street for about $60 and canvases can be purchased at the gallery. Anne Schutz is a Greater Portland area-based artist and educator with a a zeal for acrylic and watercolor painting. The cost is $150 for the series.

Basic Watercolor for Life (Beginner Watercolor Painting Series of 4 Classes) with Patrick Corey

Patrick Corey will offer a series of 4 beginner watercolor classes in February, on Fridays from 2-4pm. This will enable students to take his more advanced classes in the near future. He says, “Watercolor is a great medium for creating artwork from life. In this course we will create watercolor drawings of still life objects. Topics discussed will include colors and how to mix them, brushes, basic techniques including wash and dry brush, process, and art supplies. A suggested supply list will be provided.” The cost of 4 two-hour classes is $150. Classes are scheduled from March 7-March 28.

Oil Painting Portrait Weekend Workshop with Victoria Zurkan

If you have taken a portrait drawing workshop with Victoria Zurkan and would like to expand your skills to paint a portrait in color with oil paint to create a life-like image, this is the workshop for you! Victoria will guide you through the process of sketching the image, blocking it out, and creating realistic features. There are no prerequisites for this workshop, but some experience with life drawing and oil painting will enable you to really enhance your skills. Saturday will focus on sketching, blocking, and creating flesh tones and Sunday will focus on refining the features. You will be working from a live model with Victoria demonstrating, teaching, and coaching you as you work. Two days with lunch on your own (bring lunch or buy from local restaurant) for $250.00.

Intermediate Oil Painting Class

Mary is away from the Gallery. There are no afternoon or evening classes scheduled for Wednesday, February 12th. Classes will resume on 2/19/25 at 1:00pm and 5:00pm with a new 4 week session. For those who missed classes when Mary had to unexpectedly cancel on the past 2 Wednesdays, they will receive credit during the new session. To ensure your place in the classes, it is best to either sign up on the website or call or e-mail the gallery to confirm your place due to the popularity of Mary’s classes. We are sorry that there was this wasinconvenient to those of you who were affected, but this was a circumstance that required Mary’s attention that she could not have anticipated.

CT Rasmussen First Friday Art Walk

Join us for the First Friday Art Walk where for the month of December we will be featuring the art of CT Rasmussen who has developed his own unique style of art that he has titled Applied Tessellation Painting using layers of acrylic paint to create a mosaic effect! Each small section is a complete painting in itself! He finds inspiration in artists such as Van Gogh, Pollock, and Kent. Artistically Inclined: the Value of Partnership in Art

Join artist Peter Yesis and author Kim Yesis for a combined artist-author talk on November 1st, First Friday, starting at 5:30pm. Peter left his successful career as an engineer to take a sharp pivot to becoming a fine artist, and Kim witnessed and documented that journey in a very enjoyable read, “Side by Side: Tales from Behind the Canvas.” Peter was selected to be the Allagash Wilderness Waterway’s 2023 Artist in Residence and Kim was inspired to write her most recent book, “Artist in the Allagash.” Come hear about this unique partnership from Kim and Peter live in the gallery to kick off our First Friday event which runs 5-8pm. Kim will have copies of her books available for purchase. All are invited! Refreshments will be available.

Juried Show "That Which Sustains Us"

“That Which Sustains Us” juried show will feature art on the theme of what is important in our lives that sustains us which could vary from physical, social, natural world, animals, and spiritual themes.

The show will be held for one month with an opening reception for the featured artists on October 18th from 4:00pm to 7:30pm with the presentation of the People’s Choice Award at 7:00pm.

Todd Bonita will be judging the event. Mr. Bonita is an artist and art teacher who has galleries in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Wells, Maine.

Art History: A Lesson in Drawing Class with CT Rasmussen

This class is suited for the beginner to the advanced student. CT Rasmussen will instruct a hybrid approach to Art History & Drawing. students will learn about 25 Masters of the 20th Century, c. 1900-1950, where they will discover new methods in drawing. CT will encourage an open dialogue amongst the participants, and communication through drawing. Each class is self-contained. Each of the first 5 classes will cover 5 innovative artists of the 20th century and the 6th class will be the student artist’s choice. The first class will feature Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miro. $225 for the series of 6 classes or $45 per class.
