JUDY METCALFE

BIO

Judy Metcalfe was born in Virginia in 1950 but has lived in Rockport, MA for more than 20 years. As a child she started taking art lessons at the age of 9 and continued until she received a BFA in Fine Art from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. For the next 25 years she worked as an Architectural & Interior Designer before taking early retirement and moving north to the coast of Massachusetts where she was finally able to pursue painting full time.  She is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the New England Watercolor Society, and the Hudson Valley Art Association and is an Artist Member of Rockport Art Association, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art and the North Shore Arts Association, where she is currently serving as President thru 2021.

Judy has exhibited paintings from New England down thru the Mid Atlantic states, from Boston’s Newbury Street to Philadelphia to the Salmagundi Club and the National Arts Club in New York City. Her paintings are part of National and International collections and have been featured in art books and magazines such as:  Watercolor Magazine, American Artist Magazine, Best of America Watermedia, Splash 11: New Directions and The Artistic Touch 4.

My goal in painting is not to slavishly duplicate life or reproduce a photographic image but to heighten reality. I manipulate the reality I observe. I add and discard elements within the composition in order to create movement and balance, softening the focus in some places and in other places making it more complex in ways that will ultimately enhance and intensify the viewer’s emotional response. My favorite paintings are the ones in which I have been able to suggest a backstory but have left it to the viewer to imagine the narrative for themselves.”
