Charlie Newton

BIO

Originally from Massachusetts, Newton pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree under renowned artists Art Thrall and Carl Riter before relocating to Maine over 40 years ago. For him the act of painting has always been an intensely personal process of ongoing self-development and growth.

Rather than being focused on the final painted product, Newton’s work aims to capture that energy and evolution. The completed paintings are viewed as remnants, providing a physical manifestation of the journey that took place on the canvas.

In this way, Newton hopes his work will inspire viewers to embark on their own personal paths of creative self-discovery and growth.

“Painting is a process of self-development; the act of an artist combining with raw materials to create something new. My painting process is organic, taking form, growing and evolving on the canvas. For me, painting exists only i the present moment as a constant state of becoming.

“The final product is merely a remnant, providing physical evidence of what transpires. the painting moves on, becoming its own entity. With each viewr, it takes on new meaning, depending on what the viewer contributes and what it offers the viewer.

“If I communicated through writing I would be an author. Howeve, I have chosen to be a painter. I paint memories, with the intent of evoking responses from viewers, I invite you to become a viewer.”
