ADAM TICE
BIO
Adam was born in 1981 in Lebanon, Pa and now resides in Lewiston, Me. He remembers being drawn to the rugged coast, the fog, and the crashing waves of Maine during a visit there at less than ten year of age. After a few high school art courses and a senior year as a graphic design student at his county’s vocational technology school, Tice set off on his own and moved into a studio space instead of going to college. His apartment became his studio when he moved to Maine at age twenty and Tice continued to paint with all of his free time for the next many years. Adam’s preferred medium is oil paint on canvas or primed panels because of the loose nature of the paint, the ability to blend but also completely cover lower layers, and the vibrancy of the medium. He takes his cues from impressionism and post-impressionism, and early American work and admires most the work of artists such as Childe Hassam, Monet, Degas, and John Singer Sargent. The paintings strive to evoke the joy and calm that Tice finds in the locations and subjects that he portrays. The pictures remind him of the very best moments of a day at these places where one can still smell the sea in the air, remember the picnic on the hill, or hear sea gulls and boats in the distance. His hope is that the viewer will connect in the same way and find a peaceful place of rest in these images.
