SANDY HARPER
BIO
At a young age Sandy showed an unusual love of art and by her early teens she had won two art scholarships to study oil painting from master teachers Arthur Maynard and Alban Albert at the Barn, part of the prestigious Ridgewood Art Institute in New Jersey. While continuing to paint over the years, in the last decade Sandy returned to painting and exhibiting her work regularly. Notably she is routinely accepted into juried shows and has won many awards for her paintings. Her art can be found in private collections throughout the country and have appeared in solo and group shows in New York, Massachusetts and Maine.
For over thirty years, Sandy has been inspired to paint the beauty of Maine through seascapes, coastal villages, lighthouses and inland landscapes painting in a style of traditional realism employing a light touch and a focused attention to detail. Preferring oil as a medium, as it allows for the subtle blends and depth of color that are a hallmark of her work, Sandy uses elements of light and color to present the beauty and the power of nature. Maine seascapes with their challenge of ever changing light and dynamic movement continue to be a favorite subject. Her goal is to capture the magical moments in time, to reflect the mood and movement of the sea and the radiance of the light striking the land. She paints not only to memorialize these scenes but to share them. Since 1988 Sandy has lived and worked in the rural central Maine town of Litchfield where she has her studio.
